When does the academic year start and end?

The academic year starts at the end of August or the beginning of September and ends in mid-July.
To view the academic calendars for this year and next year, please visit this page.

Is there a deadline for applications?

There is no deadline. However, we encourage families to apply as soon as possible to secure a place for their child.

Do you charge an application fee?

At our school, families do not have to pay for an application fee. All fees (including a security deposit and registration fee for new students) are charged after the student has been successfully admitted and has started attending school.
More information about our fees and payments can be found in the Fees Booklet.

When do I have to start paying the school fees for my child?

If your child is accepted to start at the beginning of the academic year, the school fees will be due around 1 October. If your child joins during the academic year, payment will begin within two weeks of your child's first day of school.
More information about our fees and payments can be found in the Fees Booklet.

Can a student join at any time in the school year?

We admit students throughout the school year. Please note that:

  • students may be admitted after the start of the academic year into IGCSE Grade 9. That said, if arriving after March, there is no guarantee that the student will fulfil the advancement requirements for that year. There is a high likelihood they may need to repeat the year.
  • 1 November of each academic year is the last possible entry date for entry into the two-year IB programme (DP or CP).

Please see our Admissions Policy for further details.

Which grade will my child be placed in?

This grade placement table helps to understand where a student is typically placed. We consider this carefully during the admissions process, taking into account the student’s age and previous schooling.

Can my child join Grade 10 or Grade 12 in the middle of these academic programmes?

Transfer students for IGCSE or IB will be accepted on the condition that their packages comply with IGCSE subjects or IB Diploma Programme/Career-Related Programme subjects offered at RISS and acceptance by the relevant Leadership Team member. Students may not enter the second year of either IGCSE (Grade 10) or IB programmes (Grade 12) without having successfully completed the first year of the relevant programme elsewhere. Please see further details in our Admissions Policy.

My child is applying to RISS from Harbour International Primary School. Is the application process the same?

Students transferring from Harbour International Primary School have a separate process. Intake from the Harbour International will be based on the recommendations of the Harbour International Team. RISS and Harbour work closely together to support a smooth transition from primary to secondary school at RISS. You will be invited to apply at the right time, after we have held our Grade 6 Open Day for parents and students.

What is the language of instruction at RISS?

Most classes are taught in English, with the exception of Dutch A classes. Language classes often use a mix of English and the language being learned.

Can a child who does not speak English apply?

Yes. We support language learning through our ESL/EAL programmes, and all teachers are trained to support English language learners in the classroom.

My child does not speak Dutch. Is this a problem?

All students in Grades 6-10 take Dutch lessons at beginner, intermediate, advanced, or first-language levels. Dutch is an optional subject in Grades 11-12.

What Learning Support is offered at RISS?

We have a Learning Diversity programme that expands the capacity of the school to respond to some individual educational needs and be as inclusive as possible within our means (funding) for all students. Further details are available in our Handbook.

Do you offer scholarships or financial aid?

RISS does not offer scholarships or financial aid, as we are a semi-private school and our fees are already lower compared to fully-private international schools.
More information about our fees and payments can be found in the Fees Booklet.

Can RISS help me with a VISA application for my child?

RISS does not provide support for obtaining student visas.

Do you offer boarding facilities?

RISS does not offer boarding facilities. Students who are eligible to apply to RISS must live with a parent or guardian in the Netherlands. For more information, please refer to our Eligibility Policy.

Does RISS admit students who participate in talented sports programs?

RISS cannot accommodate students who require adjustments to the school schedule for intensive sports training.
